[LA-SiGMA] Fall 2013: THREE new courses. A newer course on numerical techniques!

The following THREE courses will be offered this fall taught by
LA-SiGMA faculty and collaborators. Students and faculty will participate
using videoconference rooms.
******* "Numerical Techniques in Computational Sciences" ******
This course will focus on numerical techniques broadly used in computational
sciences. It will cover the basics of numerics and numerical operations
(differentiation, integration, sorting, random numbers), ordinary differential
equations (finite differences, multistep, implicit, Runge-Kutta, Richardson
extrapolation), Monte Carlo methods, including the Metropolis algorithm, matrix
operations, linear systems, eigenvalues and eigenvectors, partial differential
equations (elliptic, parabolic and hyperbolic, finite element analysis), spectral
methods and fast Fourier transforms, and elements of signal processing (analog
to digital conversion, anti aliasing, random data, spectral density function).
Any major computer language (Fortran, C, C++, Pascal, Basic) or even higher level
languages as Mathematica, Maple or Matlab can be used to complete homework,

****** "Programming Techniques for Scientific Simulations" ******
offered by Matthias Troyer, a world expert on computational physics, and
broadcast via videoconferencing from ETH-Zurich. This course provides an
overview of programming techniques for scientific simulations. The focus is
on advanced C++ programming techniques and scientific software libraries.
Based on an overview over the hardware components of PCs and supercomputers,
optimization methods for scientific simulation codes are explained. The
first lecture is September 25th. The last class is on December 18th. You

Classes will meet on Thursdays from 8:45 to 10:30 beginning Sept. 25th.

****** "GPU Programming" **********
This course will start with an introduction to graphics software/hardware
organization and a quick overview of physical simulations. It will continue
with basics of 3D computer graphics (coordinates, vectors, lines, planes,
intercepts, transforms and primitives and scene representation), GPU
organization and shader programming (rendering pipeline, programmable shaders,
and OpenGL Shading Language, shader programming for graphical and non-graphical
computations), and GPU physical simulations and CUDA or OpenCL programming
(physical simulation techniques, CUDA, Compute Shader, or OpenCL programming for
physical simulations). You can find a complete syllabus and additional information
