Dear All,
Our first HPC training will be held on Wednesday, Sep. 4 at 9:00 AM in
307 Frey and broadcast through Adobe Connect for remote users.
/Begining Fall 2013, we are experimenting with a change in format for
the first five Weekly Trainings due to frequent requests from attendees
for longer time slots to complete hands-on exercises. Trainings begin at
9AM until Noon or earlier. After a break for lunch, attendees are
welcome to sit in 307 Frey to complete the hands-on exercises until 4PM.
HPC User Services Consultants will be available to help out with
exercises, answers questions related to the morning training session and
also provide general consultation (topics unrelated to the training) on
a case-by-case basis. If the new schedule works, we will be continuing
with this new format for all following weekly trainings. Attending the
afternoon session is optional, however, we would like to get feedback
from attendees if the new format is beneficial or not./
Wednesday, Sep. 4, 2013: Introduction to High Performance Computing,
Accounts and Allocations
This training will introduce you to HPC resources for research and
concepts needed to use these resources. You do not need to have a LONI
or LSU HPC account to attend this training. Instructions for requesting
accounts and allocations will be provided in this training.
/This training is mandatory for new and prospective users./
Next four HPC Training with afternoon session reserved for hands-on
exercises and consultation
Wednesday, Sep. 11, 2013: Introduction to Linux
The aim of this training is to get users familiar with using Linux
systems e.g. the HPC resources. This training will cover basic linux
commands and editors (emacs and vi) on Linux systems. Anyone who is
interested in learning about using a Linux based computer is encouraged
to attend. If you are not familiar with using a Linux system
particularly creating/writing files then this course is a prerequisite
for the forthcoming training on User Environment and Shell Scripting.
/This training is mandatory for HPC users who not familiar with using a
Linux/Unix system./
Wednesday, Sep. 18, 2013: HPC User Environment, Job Management with
PBS/Loadleveler
This training provides an overview of the software environment, queuing
system and running and monitoring jobs on HPC systems. /This training is
mandatory for new users.
//Prerequisite: Familiarity with Linux/Unix OS, LONI or LSU HPC account
(///No Training Accounts will be provided/)
/
Wednesday, Sep. 25, 2013: Shell Scripting I
Wednesday, Oct. 2, 2013: Shell Scripting II
For anyone who works in a Linux/Unix environment, a working knowledge of
shell scripting is essential and will boost their efficiency and
productivity tremendously. For this tutorial, we will focus on bash as
it is one of the most popular shells. This two part tutorial will
include topics such as creating simple bash scripts, flow control,
command line arguments, regex, grep, awk and sed. This is a practical
tutorial, so we will provide examples and/or hands-on exercises for most
of the covered materials. /If you are not familiar with editing files
using vi, emacs or any other linux/unix editors or are not comfortable
with changing file permission, the Introduction to Linux tutorial is a
prerequisite.//
/
We have the following set of tutorials planned (in no specific order)
and will release the schedule at later time:
Perl, Python and CUDA Programming, Make and Software installation,
LaTeX, Version Control with svn, Computational Fluid Dynamics Software, etc.
Please visit http://www.hpc.lsu.edu/training/tutorials.php for more
details and register using the link provided.
Users who plan on joining remotely will be provided with an Adobe
Connect Link in their registration confirmation email. Please see the
system requirements at
http://connect.grok.lsu.edu/Categories.aspx?parentCategoryId=1519.
Please distribute to faculty, staff and students that might be interested.
Thanks,
Alex
