[LA-SiGMA] Fall 2013: two new courses

The following two courses will be offered this fall taught by
LA-SiGMA faculty and collaborators. Students and faculty will participate
using videoconference rooms.
****** "Programming Techniques for Scientific Simulations" ******
offered by Matthias Troyer, a world expert on computational physics, and
broadcast via videoconferencing from ETH-Zurich. This course provides an
overview of programming techniques for scientific simulations. The focus is
on advanced C++ programming techniques and scientific software libraries.
Based on an overview over the hardware components of PCs and supercomputers,
optimization methods for scientific simulation codes are explained. The
first lecture is September 25th. The last class is on December 18th. You

Classes will meet on Thursdays from 8:45 to 10:30 beginning Sept. 25th.
If you are a student interested in this course, please, register for it
as soon as possible. Postdocs can attend without registering but, please, let
us know you are planning to attend.
* At LSU, please, register for PHYS 7777, section 2, 2 credits. Classes will
meet at 307 Frey.
* At Louisiana Tech, please, register for PHYS 541. Classes will meet at a
videoconference room to be decided.

****** "GPU Programming" **********
This course will start with an introduction to graphics software/hardware
organization and a quick overview of physical simulations. It will continue
with basics of 3D computer graphics (coordinates, vectors, lines, planes,
intercepts, transforms and primitives and scene representation), GPU
organization and shader programming (rendering pipeline, programmable shaders,
and OpenGL Shading Language, shader programming for graphical and non-graphical
computations), and GPU physical simulations and CUDA or OpenCL programming
(physical simulation techniques, CUDA, Compute Shader, or OpenCL programming for
physical simulations).
Classes will meet on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays 10:30–11:20 beginning

If you are a student interested in this course, please, register for it as soon as
possible. At LSU, please, register for EE 4702-1. Postdocs can attend without
