We will have our weekly TESC seminar this Thursday (6/25) at 11:30am in 108B Digital Media Center.


Dr. Shang Zhi, a research scientist at CCT and Cain Department of Chemical Engineering, will give a presentation. The title is "High Performance Computing at Intel Xeon Phi Coprocessor for Discrete Particle Model (DPM) of OpenFOAM".


Abstract:

Gas particle flow is fundamental to many engineering and environmental applications such as oil and gas industries, chemical processing industries, hydrology, and geophysics. The numerical simulation challenges of gas particle flow are magnified not only due to the large number of mesh cells for the complicated geometry but also the large number of dynamic particles. Owning to increasing computer power, discrete particle models (DPM), or Lagrangian models, have become a very useful and versatile tool to study the hydrodynamic behavior of particulate flows. In these models, the Newtonian equations of motion are solved for each individual particle, and an interaction model is applied to handle particle encounters. The DPM based on OpenFOAM was established at the high performance computing (HPC) platform (SuperMIC in LSU with Intel Xeon Phi Coprocessors). It coupled a multiphysics simulation algorithm for both fundamental physics needs as well as efficient usage of HPC resources.
