We will have our weekly TESC seminar this Thursday (6/18) at 11:30am in 108B Digital Media Center.

Sameer Abu Asal, a graduate student from the dept. of Computer Engineering, and Conrad Moore, a graduate student from the dept. of Physics and Astronomy, will co-present. The title of their talk is "GPU Accelerated Hirsch-Fye Quantum Monte Carlo".

Abstract:
The exponential computational scaling of quantum calculations makes the many-body problem for interacting quantum particles incredibly difficult.  Many types of classical simulations have best enjoyed the increase in computational power which has followed Moore's law: from hundreds of particles to hundreds of millions in a time span of about 50 years.  However, quantum many body simulations are still limited to relatively few particles and lattice sizes, by comparison.  This has made new accelerator technologies, such as GPU's, appealing for simulation of quantum systems.  Quantum Monte Carlo provides a numerically exact unbiased solution to the quantum lattice problem, but suffers from the minus sign problem for fermions. In this talk, they will discuss the application of the Hirsch-Fye algorithm to lattice problems, the what they intend to measure with the code, as well as the GPU implementation.
