[LA-SiGMA-TESC] TESC (Technologies of Extreme Scale Computing) seminar on Thursday (10/8)

Dear all,


Technologies of Extreme Scale Computing (TESC) group will have a seminar this Thursday (10/8) at 12:00pm-1:00pm in 1034 Digital Media Center.  TESC seminars are intended to provide a platform  for exchanging ideas and establishing collaborations, especially in scientific code development and big data analytics using HPC.  We are grateful for the support of the High Performance Computing, Computational Biology, LA-SiGMA, Center for Computation and Technology, and Louisiana Optical Network Initiative.


Dr. Frank Loffler, an IT consultant at CCT, will give a presentation entitled "PSAMR: A New Parallelization Scheme for Adaptive Mesh Refinement".

Abstract:

A new method for parallelization of adaptive mesh refinement called Parallel Structured Adaptive Mesh Refinement (PSAMR) will be presented. This new method offers the lower throughput cost (i.e.  wall time x processor count) of subcycling in time, but with the runtime performance (i.e. smaller wall time) of evolving all levels at once using the time step appropriate to the finest level on a large number of processors. The effectiveness using an adaptive mesh refinement code will be demonstrated. The optimization can improve scaling of mesh refinement codes, making larger runs more feasible. It achieves a speedup of 1.7 to 1.9 when the processor count for a given AMR run is doubled, consistent with the theoretical predictions.
