Hi all,

We are going to have a two-hour workshop on Thursday (10/23) starting at 11:00am in 1034 Digital Media Center.


Dr. Clint Whaley, an associate professor at the Computer Science and Engineering Division, will discuss code optimization. The titled is "An introduction of real-world code optimization".

This tutorial briefly overviews architectural concepts key in understanding
how to optimize real-world compute kernels.  Since most operations are
natively memory bound, we will first cover transformations necessary to
improve memory performance, such as register and memory blocking.  Then,
as time allows we will discuss computational optimizations, such as
loop unrolling, accumulator expansion, software pipelining, etc.
Note that this tutorial mainly introduces the conceptual framework and
general strategies that are necessary to understand code optimization.
Some important important topics that would require their own full tutorial,
such as SIMD vectorization and details on profiling code to find performance
kernels, will not be covered in detail.
