[LA-SiGMA-gpu] FWD: Data workshop hosted at CCT

Dear GPU team members,

This is Jian Tao, an IT consultant at CCT. I am temporarily playing
Zhifeng's role in the project while we look for a long term
replacement. I have a background in physics and know a bit about
HPC and GPU. In the next several weeks, I will find chances to
talk with many of your to catch up with the progress of the team.
Hopefully, I could contribute to the project to some extend
during this period of time. Your support and cooperation are greatly 
appreciated.

That is all for the introduction. :) Here comes the major subject of
this email.

There will be a data workshop hosting by CCT on July 8-10. I would
strongly encourage the GPU team members to join the data workshop.

For domain scientists, this is a great opportunity to learn (at least 
get familiar to) some fundamental concepts and widely used tools to deal 
with data, especially big data. This is also a great opportunity
for CS students/researchers to know more about the big data challenges 
facing domain scientists.

We will organize a follow-up meeting to discuss topics that are relevant 
to LA-SiGMA, and GPUs of course.

The Data Intensive Summer School focuses on the skills needed to manage,
process and gain insight from large amounts of data. It is targeted at
researchers from the*physical, biological, economic and social sciences*
that are beginning to drown in data. We will cover the nuts and bolts of
data intensive computing, common tools and software, predictive
analytics algorithms, data management and non-relational database
models. Given the short duration of the summer school, the emphasis will
be on providing a solid foundation that the attendees can use as a
starting point for advanced topics of particular relevance to their work.

       Prerequisites:

   * Experience working in a Linux environment
   * Familiarity with relational data base models
   * Examples and assignments will most likely use R, MATLAB and Weka. We
     do not require experience in these languages or tools, but you
     should already have an understand of basic programming concepts
     (loops, conditionals, functions, arrays, variables, scoping, etc.)
