Dear all--
I agree with Ward. There is much to be gained if we work together. In addition to the LONI and La-SiGMA initiatives and the existing IAM infrastructure, the college of engineering is leading a very important national manufacturing initiative as well (as Dean Koubek can attest). A statewide initiative in advanced manufacturing must of necessity also align with the national manufacturing initiative in advanced materials. ORED would be pleased to host a conversation on this.

I would like to share with you what is happening at LSU related to this call. When I first received this call from KT Valsaraj's office I sent the first e-mail below (Dec. 20th) to the executive committee of the Institute for Advanced Materials. After reading the report from the NRC "Novel Processes for Advanced Manufacturing" I sent the second e-mail with my summary (attachment). This has also been forwarded to KT office and to the dean of engineering. In general, Dean Koubek agreed with my summary.
I have been appointed by the NAS to serve on the Defense Materials Manufacturing and Infrastructure (DMMI) Standing Committee, whose next meeting will be Feb. 5th and 6th in Washington, DC. The meeting is organized around data management and data mining.
If possible I would like for all of us to work together on this proposal. Data management or mining will be a big issue but at present that means DFT calculation of materials. Our proposal must be coupled with engineers who know what manufacturing means. My perspective is that we have to aim our program at eventually getting DOD money. If you want to see what the competition is look at the Center for Innovative Materials Processing through Direct Digital Deposition at Penn State.

I have read the report from DMMI NRC report "Novel Processes for Advanced materials," and I would like to give you my summary. I have attached this summary which we will discuss at the next IAM executive committee meeting. Let me summarize what I have written, just in case you don't have time to read the attached document.
1. Those on the inside of the workshop will be on the inside for funding. Richard Martukanitz told them how great the PENN State Center for Innovative Materials Processing through Direct Digital Deposition was. Gerard Ludtke told them how great the ORNL High-magnetic field processing center was. Boebinger told them how great the Nat. High Magnetic Field Laboratory is----
2. For reasons I do not know this meeting focused on three areas of advanced manufacturing-1) Additive Manufacturing; 2) Electromagnetic Field Manipulation, and ; 3) Design of Materials.
3. My perspective is that our opening is in the Design of materials.
By the way, I have not heard from the two people on the executive committee that constantly remind me that advanced manufacturing if very important.

Dear LONI Institute and LA-SiGMA members,
Just before the holidays, the State EPSCoR office sent out the request for proposals for the next EPSCoR RII Track 1 competition (attached). If successful, this grant would provide up to $4/year for up to five years. The subject matter of the RFP has significant overlap with LA-SiGMA and LONI Institute (LI). Quoting from the RFP:
"The proposal must be focused on scientific and engineering research in Advanced Materials and Manufacturing; i.e., physics-based materials models to link manufacturing, production, design, and materials; smart materials; and multiscale systems and manufacturing. The proposed initiative should bring together a confluence of scientists and engineers to bridge the gaps that exist between theory, modeling and simulation, application, and production. The goal is to link the structure and composition of materials—extending the entire length scale—with their manufacturing and properties. Successful proposals will leverage the State’s investments in computational resources, cyberinfrastructure, and advanced materials science. Proposals should establish strong linkages between institutions and the private sector. EPSCoR funds must be expended in Louisiana and cannot be transferred to other locations for these initiatives."
We should be able to leverage many of the outreach and education programs that have been build by LI and LA-SiGMA. Thus far our research focus has been materials design using ICME, but we have not settled on any particular set of materials yet. We would like to know if you would be able to participate in an organization meeting some time in the next week or so to discuss the possibility of putting together a proposal based upon LA-SiGMA and LI. Possible dates for the meeting could be Jan 13, 15, 16, 22, or 23. Since classes start at LSU on the 15th, the 13th might be the best date. If enough people are interested, we will use a doodle poll to find the best time
