Dear All,
This is a kind reminder that our next LI-LA-SiGMA seminar is today, April 12
at 2.00pm. Our speaker is Dr. Les Butler, Dept of Chemistry, LSU
Title: 3D+ X-ray & Neutron Imaging in Materials Science for Energy: Hydrogen
Storage and Batteries
Abstract: Neutron imaging is an emerging field with new-found applications
for energy applications. Compared to X-ray imaging, neutron fluxes are much
lower, thus speed and spatial resolution cannot compete with X-ray imaging.
However, neutron-matter interactions, especially with crystalline materials,
offer unique contrast mechanisms. We have shown that neutron imaging is
sensitive to the lithium-graphite structures of charged lithium-ion polymer
batteries, even when imaging an intact, commercial battery. Processing raw
neutron images into clean 3D volumes is challenging. First, the "sit still"
requirement is violated when imaging a dynamic system; this problem is
partially alleviated with a Greek golden ratio based angle order. Second,
the inverse Radon transform requires [0,1] neutron-matter interactions, a
poor assumption for thicker samples. Third, the large data volumes are
challenging to reduce to a single scalar description of the complex sample.
Butler is a co-PI on an instrument development team seeking a $20M neutron
imaging beamline at the ORNL Spallation Neutron Source, thus solutions to
these problems are welcomed
