[LA-SiGMA] HPC Training: Introdution to Linux and Python

Dear All,

The schedule for the Summer 2017 HPC Training is available at http://www.hpc.lsu.edu/training/tutorials.php.

There will be 3 consecutive HPC trainings from 9:00 AM-11:00 AM from Wednesday, May 24-26 in 307 Frey Computing Service Center and broadcast through WebEx for remote users.

Wednesday, May 24, 2017: Introduction to Linux
The aim of this training is to get users familiar with using Linux systems e.g. the HPC resources. This training will cover basic Linux commands and editors (emacs and vi) on Linux systems. Anyone who is interested in learning about using a Linux based computer is encouraged to attend. If you are not familiar with using a Linux system particularly creating/writing files then this course is a prerequisite for the forthcoming training on HPC User Environment 1 & 2.
This training is *mandatory* for HPC users who are not familiar with using a Linux/Unix system.
Prerequisites: Access to a Linux/Unix based computer i.e. Linux (VirtualBox images provided at HPC website), Mac OSX and Windows with Cygwin and Bash installed.

Wednesday, May 25, 2017: Introduction to Python
Python is a high-level programming language, easy to learn yet extremely powerful. This training will provide an introduction to programming in Python. The subjects include basic Python syntax, Python classes used in object-oriented programming. Basic Python modules for scientific computing and plotting will also be introduced. During the training, simple Python programs will be provided for demonstration.
Prerequisites: Basic understanding of a programming language is assumed but not required.

Wednesday, May 26, 2017: Intermediate Python Programming
Python is a great general-purpose, powerful programming language and has also become a powerful environment for scientific and engineering computations. This tutorial will focus on popular Python modules numpy, matplotlib and scipy to get users familiar with building quick Python real world computing solutions.
Prerequisites: No prior Python programming knowledge is assumed but some experience in a programming language will be useful.

This training provides an overview of the HPC/LONI general account and allocation policies, hardware and software environments, queuing system, compiling programs, writing job submission scripts, running and monitoring jobs on HPC systems.
This training is a *mandatory* two-day training event for all HPC/LONI new users held on June 7 and June 14.
Prerequisites: Familiarity with Linux/Unix commands and editors
