Dear All,

The schedule for the Spring 2017 HPC Training is available at http://www.hpc.lsu.edu/training/tutorials.php.

Our next HPC training will be held on Wednesday, March 15 at 9:00 AM in 307 Frey Computing Service Center and broadcast through WebEx for remote users.

Note that all HPC training will start at 9:00 AM. We have a newly added lecture on The Agave Platform on Tuesday, March 28.

Wednesday, March 15, 2017: Introduction to Python
Python is a high-level programming language, easy to learn yet extremely powerful. This training will provide an introduction to programming in Python. The subjects include basic Python syntax, Python classes used in object-oriented programming. Basic Python modules for scientific computing and plotting will also be introduced. During the training, simple Python programs will be provided for demonstration.
Prerequisites: Basic understanding of a programming language is assumed but not required.

Wednesday, March 22, 2017: Parallel computing with R
R is a widely used language in data analysis with rich features. Its performance, however, is limited by the fact that it is single-threaded. On the other hand, to take advantage of the processing power of HPC clusters, computer programs need to be able to run in parallel. In this tutorial, we will focus on how to use the "parallel" package in R and a few related packages to parallelize and enhance the performance of R programs.
Prerequisites: Basic understanding of R is assumed but not required.

Tuesday, March 28, 2017: Agave: Ordering a Science Gateway To Go (Newly added)
 Despite the growing importance of high performance computing in every branch of science, many scientists are not computationally savvy and are intimidated by the Linux command prompt. Science Gateways, exist, in part to make life easier for them by providing a web-based portal that makes it possible to run jobs on an HPC resource (e.g. SuperMIC, SuperMike2, or QueenBee2).
Gateways are growing. They accounted for 77% of all active cycles in the XSEDE network in the fourth quarter of 2016. In addition, the NSF has recently committed $35 million to found a Science Gateways Institute (http://sciencegateways.org/) in order to accelerate this type of research.
The Agave Platform was developed to make it easy for scientists to take their existing code and enable it for use as a Gateway. In this tutorial, learn how to convert your existing code into a gateway and make it available to selected users.
Prerequisites: Some experience running jobs on a super computer will be useful, a LONI/LSU HPC account would be helpful
