[LA-SiGMA] Fall 2016: New course on Introduction to High Performance Computing

In collaboration with the Blue Waters project at the University of Illinois, LSU is offering an online graduate course on Introduction to High Performance Computing. Please, register for PHYS 7895 (section 2) if you are interested. Postdocs can attend without registering but we ask you to notify us. 

The course includes online video lectures by David Keyes (King Abdullah University of Science and Technology and Columbia University), and quizzes and homework assignments with access to accounts on the NSF supported Blue Waters supercomputer. Juana Moreno is the local instructor and will meet with the students weekly to discuss the material covered, questions on homework, and the final group project. The time of the weekly meeting will be agreed on after the term starts.  

Lecture coverage includes:
  - Introduction to large-scale predictive simulations: the combined culture of CS&E and HPC
  - Introduction to parallel architecture and programming models
  - Introduction to MPI, PETSc, and other software frameworks for HPC
  - Parallel algorithms for the solution of large, sparse linear systems and nonlinear systems with large, sparse Jacobians
  - Parallel algorithms for partial differential equations
  - Parallel algorithms for N-body particle dynamics
