Dear All,

 

Dr. Richard Scalettar of the University of California, Davis, will be giving a talk Wednesday, November 17th, at 3:30pm in room 1008B at the Digital Media Center, Louisiana State University. The title of his talk is "Superconducting Transition in a Flat Band."

 

Abstract:

The product of the interaction strength and the density of states at the Fermi level establishes the criteria for many phase transitions in condensed matter systems, eg the BCS superconducting Tc = w0 exp [-1/l/N(EF)], or the Stoner criterion for ferromagnetism UN(EF) = 1. As a consequence, lattice geometries with a large density of states are of interest- the van-Hove singularity of N(EF) for the half-filled square lattice Hubbard model has been suggested as playing a role in cuprate superconductivity. An extreme limit is the case of a at band where the energy E(k) is independent of momentum k, suggesting a very large propensity to form ordered phases. On the other hand, it has also been suggested that Bose-Einstein condensation might be problematic in at bands, because of the absence of momentum k0 where E(k0) is minimal into which to condense. In this seminar we explore these issues using Quantum Monte Carlo simulations of the attractive Hubbard model on the `Lieb lattice'- a 1/4-depleted square lattice which has such a completely at fermionic band. We also discuss an interesting construction which can be used to produce lattices with at bands and associated localized states.  

 

Biography:

Richard Scalettar received his PhD in physics in 1986 from the University of California, Santa Barbara.  In 1989, after a post-doc in the Chemistry Department at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign, he joined the Physics faculty at the University of California, Davis.  Prof. Scalettar's research is in the application of Quantum Monte Carlo methods to problems in quantum magnetism, superconductivity, and localization.  He was elected Fellow of the American Physical Society in 2004, and served as chair of the APS Division of Computational Physics in 2010.  In 2009, he received the Chancellor's Outstanding Undergraduate Mentor Award at UC Davis.
