Dear All,

LSU Information Technology Services, LSU Center for Computation & Technology and the Louisiana Optical Network Initiative (LONI) are pleased to announce the 3rd Annual High Performance Computing Week from June 2nd through June 6th, 2014 at the Louisiana Digital Media Center. Registration for all events in now open. We also have funds to cover travel and lodging for attendees who will be traveling to Baton Rouge for these events, see below for more information.

3rd Annual LONI Parallel Programming Workshop from June 2nd to June 4th
This workshop will first introduce users to the concepts of Parallel Programming, then cover how those concepts apply to solving problems frequently encountered in numerical studies such as matrix-matrix multiplication, using various parallel programming techniques such as MPI, OpenMP and OpenACC. This workshop will be hands-on oriented, so participants should have prior knowledge on programming, C/C++ or Fortran is required.

3rd Annual High Performance Computing User Symposium on June 4th and June 5th
The 3rd Annual HPC User Symposium will run from Wednesday evening (June 4th) through Thursday afternoon (June 5th). A poster session featuring research done on HPC systems will be held on Wednesday evening. On Thursday, there be a few invited talks and a series of contributed talks from students, postdocs, faculty and research staff. All participants are encouraged to submit an abstract for a poster or contributed talk. Preference will be given to students and postdocs for a 15-20 minute contributed talk. The symposium is open to all, with the hope of engendering cross-discipline communication and exchange of methods and experiences.  This is an opportunity for the user community to come together and share experiences and methods. Anyone interested in HPC is more than welcome to come by and find out how HPC systems are utilized for research at LONI member institutions.

GPU Workshop presented by Nvidia on June 6th
Nvidia Corporation, LSU Center for Computation & Technology and LSU Information Technology Services will host a one day Nvidia GPU workshop on June 6th, 2014 in 1034 Louisiana Digital Media Center at LSU in Baton Rouge as part of the 2014 HPC Week. LONI’s QueenBee supercomputer is currently in the process of being refreshed and the replacement cluster is expected to have a significant number of NVIDIA GPU devices. This workshop is an opportunity for LONI researchers to get a head start on developing CUDA enabled programs to use on the QueenBee replacement cluster.

7:30 AM - 8:00 AM : Registration
8:00 AM - 9:00 AM : CUDA 101 - a basic intro to the C/C++ CUDA language
9:00 AM - 10:00 AM : Basic CUDA optimizations - covering GPU architecture and key optimizations (threads, memory) for GPU performance
10:00 AM - 10:15 AM : Break
10:15 AM - 12:00 PM: Hands on CUDA application walkthrough (2D stencil code) Parts A, B, C
12:00 PM - 1:00 PM : Lunch (provided)
1:00 PM - 2:30 PM : CUDA Libraries - Intro to CUBLAS and CUSPARSE, with a walkthrough sample application porting of a Conjugate Gradient Solver
2:30 PM - 2:45 PM : Break
2:45 PM - 5:00 PM : CUDA Tools - cuda-gdb, visual profiler, nsight eclipse edition (IDE)

All sessions will include ample time for hands-on exercises to be carried out on LSU's Shelob supercomputer. Training accounts for Shelob will be provided to all attendees.

Prerequisites:
- Basic understanding of C/C++ programming.  No parallel or GPU experience required.
- Participants must bring their own laptop with wireless connectivity.

Instructor: Bob Crovella
Biography: Bob is a Solution Architect at NVIDIA and leads a technical team responsible for supporting GPU Computing products in the high performance computing ecosystem. Bob joined NVIDIA in 1998. Previous to his current role at NVIDIA, he led a technical team that was responsible for the design-in support of NVIDIA GPU products into OEM systems, working directly with the OEM engineering and technical staffs responsible for their respective products. Prior to joining NVIDIA, Bob held various engineering positions at Chromatic Research, Honeywell, Cincinnati Milacron, and Eastman Kodak. Bob holds degrees from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (M. Eng., Communications and Signal Processing) and The State University of NY at Buffalo (BSEE). He resides with his family in the Dallas TX area.

Participants from outside Baton Rouge:
There are limited travel funds available for attending the Symposium and Workshops. All participants traveling to Baton Rouge for attending the Symposium and Workshops will be considered for travel awards provided:

  1.  Register for the Symposium and Workshop by May 15, 2014
  2.  To be considered for a travel award, please upload a one or two paragraph proposal (in pdf/doc format) describing why a travel award is beneficial to your research for attending the workshop and
  3.  submit an abstract for poster or oral presentation (if attending Symposium) by May 15th, 2014.

Priority will be given first to participants who are presenting (poster or oral) at the Symposium and then to participants who are attending the workshops held preceding and following the symposium. Travel awards include lodging for the duration of events that you have registered for. Please register now so that we can block rooms in hotels close to LSU campus. Participants who are awarded travel will be put up at Staybridge Suites, about 20 mins walk from the Digital Media Center.
