Dear all, 

    A new LA-SiGMA course is going to be broadcast from LSU: Condensed Matter Physics, taught by Ilya Vekhter this fall. Students and faculty can participate remotely using videoconferencing.

   If you are a LSU student interested in this course, please register now to ensure the course meets the required minimum student enrollment (class registration number is provided below). Students at other universities, please contact Juana Moreno at moreno at lsu.edu by Friday, August 15th, to arrange for the course to be offered at your university. Postdocs can attend without registering but we ask you to notify us. Classes begin August 25th and end December 6th at LSU. 

******************  Condensed Matter Physics *********************************
This is the first course in the sequence of Condensed Matter Physics courses, and aims to introduce the students to the basic concepts and ideas of the field, connecting them with experimental observations. We will cover the free electron model of metals, crystal structure, band structure (nearly free electrons, tight-binding model etc.) of solids, Boltzmann transport equation, lattice vibrations, and elementary physics of nanostructures, and basics of magnetism in insulators. If time allows, we will spend last couple of lectures on examples of interactions. Knowledge of the basic quantum mechanics at the level of Schroedinger equation in an external potential is expected, and familiarity with the statistical properties of fermions would be helpful (although will be introduced along the way). Current technology allows the class to be highly interactive and discussion-based across campuses. Classes meet Tuesday and Thursday 9:00-10:20.
