Dear All,

Dr. Gleb Yushin of Georgia Institute of Technology will be giving a talk
Wednesday, April 30th at 3:30pm in room 122, Nethken Hall, Louisiana Tech
University. The title of his talk is "Nanostructured Composites for Energy
Storage Applications."

Abstract:
High power energy storage devices, such as supercapacitors and Li-ion
batteries, are critical for the development of zero-emission electrical
vehicles, large scale smart grid, and energy efficient ships and
locomotives. The energy storage characteristics of supercapacitors and
Li-ion batteries are mostly determined by the specific capacities of their
electrodes, while their power characteristics are influenced by the maximum
rate of the ion transport. The talk will focus on the development of
nanocomposite electrodes capable to improve both the energy and power
storage characteristics of the state of the art devices. Carbon-polymer,
carbon-metal oxide and metal-metal oxide nanocomposites have been
demonstrated to greatly exceed the specific capacitance of traditional
electrodes for supercapacitors. Selected materials showed the unprecedented
ultra-fast charging and discharging characteristics. Rationally designed
silicon-carbon-polymer and sulfur-carbon-polymer composites showed up to 8
times higher specific capacity than conventional electrodes utilized in
Li-ion batteries. Stable performance for 100-2000 cycles has been
demonstrated. Finally, the talk will provide several examples of
multifunctional electrode materials demonstrating both high energy storage
capacities and ultra-high specific strength and toughness. In order to
overcome the limitations of traditional composites precise control over the
materials structure and porosity at the nanoscale was required.

Biography:
Dr. Gleb Yushin, is a tenured Associate Professor at the School of Materials
and Engineering and a Director of the Center for Nanostructured Materials
for Energy Storage at Georgia Institute of Technology. For his contributions
to materials science, he has received numerous awards and recognitions,
including the prestigious R&D 100 Award, Honda Initiation Grant Award,
National Science Foundation CAREER Award, Air Force Office of Scientific
Research Young Investigator Award, and several distinctions from National
Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), such as Nano 50 Award. Dr.
Yushin has co-authored 22 patents and patent applications and multiple
publications on energy storage materials, including the publications in
Science and Nature Materials. His current research is focused on advancing
energy storage materials and devices for electronics, transportation and
multiple grid applications.
