Dear All,

 

Dr. Igor Tupitsyn a professor at the University of British Columbia will be
giving a seminar tomorrow at 3:30 pm in 243 Lindy Boggs at Tulane
University. The title of his talk is "On the road to Quantum Computations:
Quantum Decoherence."

 

Abstract:

A worldwide effort is presently on to make a Universal Quantum Computer. The
basic element of such a computer is a Qubit and many candidates into it are
under intensive study now. However, as any quantum system, Qubit can rapidly
lose its initial information due to interactions with environment, i.e.
decohere. This is the main obstacle on the road to Quantum Computations and
to engineering of novel quantum devices. 

 

Thus, quantum applications cannot be optimized until one has a control over
the decoherence processes. However, such a control requires to deal with
quantum systems with many degrees of freedom, whose complexity frustrates
many theoretical efforts and where decoherence is very strong. Can this
problem be solved at the present time? Can decoherence be controlled?

 

It turns out that the answer to this question is "yes" and in my talk I am
going to demonstrate it on examples of two complex and chemically modifiable
systems from a wide class of Electronic Spin Insulators and Semiconductors -
on quantum molecular magnets and on metallo-organic semiconductors. These
works were performed in collaboration with experimental groups from the
National High Magnetic Field Laboratory (Tallahassee, Florida, US) and from
the London Center for Nanotechnology (London, UK).

 

Dr. Igor Tupitsyn is a theoretical physicist, an expert in the fields of
Quantum Decoherence and Novel Computational Techniques in Strongly
Correlated Quantum Systems. He graduated from top Russian schools (as an
undergraduate, from the Moscow Engineering Physics Institute, and with a PhD
from the Russian Federal Research Center "Kurchatov Institute") and obtained
a Permanent Research Scientist position at the Kurchatov Institute together
with a faculty position at the Moscow State University for Aviation
Technologies very soon after PhD. However, a few years later he left both
positions for a Postdoctoral Fellow at the Spinoza Institute of Theoretical
Physics in Utrecht (Netherlands) and now he is a Research Scientist at the
Pacific Institute of Theoretical Physics in Vancouver (Canada).

 

He has broad spectrum of scientific interests, from Critical and Collective
Phenomena in Strongly Correlated Systems to Mechanisms and Control of
Decoherence. For his development, with colleagues, of the widely used now
Worm Monte Carlo algorithm he was awarded by prestigious Kurchatov Prize.
His ongoing work on theory of quantum decoherence for Electronic Spin
Insulators and Semiconductors has already lead to two Nature papers and, in
particular, to the first absolute comparison of theoretical and experimental
decoherence times for a complex condensed-matter system. He also worked on
Bose Einstein condensation of magnons, on topological phase and excitations,
on FQHE, etc, and actively collaborates with experimental groups in physics
and chemistry from US, UK, and France.
