[LA-SiGMA] HPC Training: Introduction to Linux

Dear All,

The next HPC training will be held on Wednesday, Feb. 6 at 10:00 am in 
307 Frey and broadcast through Adobe Connect for remote users.

Wednesday, Feb 6, 2013: Introduction to Linux
The aim of this tutorial is to get users familiar with using Linux/Unix 
or *nix systems for e.g. the HPC resources. This tutorial provides 
beginner and intermediate users with basic *nix command line environment 
experience. Topics covered in this class include navigating through the 
system, useful commands, changing file permission, editors (vi and 
emacs) and basic shell scripting (creating and executing simple 
scripts). If you are not familiar with working on a *nix system, this 
tutorial is a prerequisite for the scripting tutorial on Feb. 27.

Wednesday, Feb 20, 2013: Regular Expressions
Regular Expression (regex) is a specific pattern that provides concise 
and flexible means to "match" (specify and recognize) strings of text, 
such as particular characters, words, or patterns of characters. Regex 
is used by many text editors, utilities and programming languages to 
search and manipulate text based on patterns.

Wednesday, Feb 27, 2013: Advanced Shell Scripting
Continuing on from basic shell scripting introduced in Intro to Linux, 
this tutorial will cover advanced topics such as flow control, command 
line arguments, awk and sed. Participants are excepted to be familiar 
with working on a Linux/Unix system with particular emphasis on creating 
and editing files with editors such as vi and emacs. If you are not 
familiar with using editors on a *nix system, the Intro to Linux 
training is strongly recommended.

All of these tutorials are not intended solely for HPC users. Anyone who 
is interested in learning about using a Linux based computer is 
encouraged to attend the Intro to Linux training. Anyone who wants to 
get more out of their *nix systems to carry out simple tasks such as 
writing job submission scripts, analyzing/manipulating data, writing 
scripts for carrying out system administration tasks etc. is encouraged 
to attend the Regex and Scripting Tutorial.

For the benefit of participants who do not have access to a *nix system, 
we have created a virtualbox image of Cent OS. Instructions for 
downloading and installing the image are provided at 
http://www.hpc.lsu.edu/training/archive/downloads.php. If you need help 
with installing the image feel free to email me back. You can also drop 
by the training room around 9:30AM on the day of the training.
