Dear All,

LSU Information Technology Services, LSU Center for Computation &
Technology, Louisiana Optical Network Initiative (LONI) and the
Louisiana Alliance for Simulation-Guided Materials Applications
(LA-SiGMA) are pleased to announce the 2nd Annual High Performance
Computing Week from June 10'th through June 15'th, 2013. Seating is
limited for the Workshops so please register early.

*2nd Annual LONI Parallel Programming Workshop*
Date : June 10 - 12, 2013
Time: 8:30 AM - 5:00 PM
Venue: 307 Frey CSC
Website: http://www.hpc.lsu.edu/training/workshop.php or http://goo.gl/fksJn
Registration Fee: None
Registration Deadline: May 27, 2013
Description:
/This workshop will first introduce users to the concepts of Parallel
Programming, then cover how those concepts apply to solving problems
frequently encountered in numerical studies such as matrix-matrix
multiplication, using various parallel programming techniques such as
OpenMP, OpenACC and MPI. It will target both the CPU and GPU
architecture. This workshop will be hands-on oriented, so the attendants
should have prior knowledge on programming, C/C++ or Fortran is preferred.//
/
*2nd Annual High Performance Computing User Symposium*
Date and Times: 6PM - 8PM on June 12, 2013 and 8:30AM - 5:00PM on June
13, 2013
Venue: Life Sciences Annex Lobby and Auditorium.
Website: http://www.hpc.lsu.edu/users/symposium/index.php
Registration Fee: None
Registration Deadline: May 27, 2013 (if requesting travel), June 7, 2013
(if presenting), on-site registration if not presenting.
Description:
/The Symposium will consists of a series of invited talks and a poster
session discussing research using HPC systems. The symposium is open to
all, with the hope of engendering cross-discipline communication and
exchange of methods and experiences.//
//
//This is an opportunity for the user community to come together and
share experiences and methods. Anyone interested in HPC is more than
welcome to come by and find out how HPC systems are utilized in research
at LONI member institutions.//
//
//All participants are encouraged to present a poster displaying your
recent work using HPC resources. Participants who are not HPC users or
are prospective HPC users are encouraged to present work that can
benefit using HPC resources. This is an opportunity to meet our user
community and foster collaborations.//
//
//Please upload a one-page abstract in pdf or doc format at the
symposium website. Please consider using the templates (tex and word)
provided to ensure uniformity in the Book of Abstracts. Poster Board
size is 4ft x 4ft. A few undergraduate, graduate students and postdocs
will be selected by the Scientific Advisory Committee to present a
short, 15-30 talks in lieu of poster presentation./

*Scientific Visualization with VisIt, Mathematica, and ImageJ*
Date: June 14 - 15, 2013
Venue: 307 Frey CSC (subject to change)
Instructors: Les Butler (LSU Chemistry) and Dr. Jinghua Ge (LSU CCT)
Website: http://www.hpc.lsu.edu/training/workshop.php or http://goo.gl/CiPOg
Registration Fee: $50
Registration Deadline: May 27, 2013
Description:
/The objective is an understanding of the procedure for converting a
series of 2D images into 3D images, movies, and fly-throughs. This is
the basis of the medical CT scan, industrial non-destructive testing,
and much of scientific visualization. The second objective is
introduction to two software packages---ImageJ and VisIt---that are both
extremely powerful, will run on your laptop, and are free. When
finished with this course, you should be able to perform visualizations
of 3D data sets when provided with data in open access formats such as
raw binary, stacked TIFF, and HDF5. You will run Mathematica notebooks
in class as we discuss: (a) 2D image sequences into 3D volumes, (b)
histograms and binarization, (c) image transformations such as Gaussian
filtering, distance transform, and watershed transform, (d) connected
component analysis, and (e) simple movie making.//
//
//Using the VisIt visualization software, we'll teach students visualize
large scale datasets in distributed mode so that the expensive
computation runs on high performance computing clusters. Students will
have take-away visit-python scripts to do: pseudo-color, histogram,
volume rendering, isosurface, orthoslices, volume re-sample, sub-volume
selection, and movie making. These visit-python scripts can be submitted
to HPC resources for batch processing and the result images will be
saved and retrieved back for user inspection.//

*Participants from outside Baton Rouge:*
There are limited travel funds available for attending the Symposium and
Workshops. All participants traveling to Baton Rouge for attending the
Symposium and Workshops will be considered for travel awards provided you:

 1. Register for the Symposium and Workshop by May 27, 2013,
 2. Submit an abstract for poster or oral presentation (if attending
Symposium) by May 27, 2013 and
 3. Upload a one or two paragraph proposal (in pdf/doc format)
describing why a travel award is beneficial to your research by May
    27, 2013.

Priority will be given first to participants who are presenting (poster
or oral) at the Symposium and then to participants who are attending the
workshops held preceding and following the symposium.

*HPC Week 2013 has been made possible due to generous support from*

  * Board of Regents, State of Louisiana,
  * Louisiana Optical Network Initiative (LONI),
  * Xavier University of Lousiana,
  * Information Technology Services, Louisiana State University,
  * Center for Computation & Technology, Louisiana State University,
  * Louisiana Alliance for Simulation-Guided Materials Applications
    (LA-SiGMA).

On behalf of the Organizing and Scientific Advisory Committee,

Thanks,
Alex
