Dear All,
Dr. Kenneth Poeppelmeier, of Northwestern University will be giving a
seminar tomorrow, April 19th, at 3:30 p.m. in the Life Sciences Annex
Auditorium (A-101) at Louisiana State University. The title of his
talk is "Hydrothermal Synthesis of Noncentrosymmetric Mixed Metal
Oxide-Fluorides."
Abstract:
This talk will discuss the chemical rationale Dr. Poeppelmeier have
employed to make new mixed metal oxyfluoride compounds and their
relationship with well-known noncentrosymmetric materials such as
lithium niobate and potassium titanyl phosphate. Synthesis of
noncentrosymmetric materials materials that lack an inversion center
has been a long-standing and difficult goal of inorganic chemistry.
Noncentrsoymmetric crystals are used for their piezoelectric,
ferroelectric, and second-harmonic generation (SHG) properties.
Recently, nanolithography has sought UV lasers to create increasingly
small lithographic features. To pursue UV lasers, scientists have
sought new SHG active crystals to double the frequency of laser light
to higher energies. One such material is the oxyfluoride KBe2BO3F2; we
seek to develop similar materials for use as SHG-active crystals.
Efficient SHG-active crystals often have anions with aligned polar
moments in the solid state. Therefore, to synthesize highly-efficient
SHG crystals, a promising strategy is to utilize anions that
inherently contain polar moments to establish principles and
guidelines to target syntheses of SHG-active materials.
KENNETH POEPPELMEIER is Professor of Chemistry at Northwestern
University. He received his B.S. (1971) and Ph.D. (1984) degrees from
