Dear Leigh,

I went to the La-SiGMA REU website and noticed that two REU projects put
forth by members of the SD3 group at LSU, one by Dr. Moldovan and one by
myself do not appear on the web site under "REU/Projects". Therefore
students will not be given the opportunity to select them. I believe that
Dr. Moldovan submitted his by the deadline set in your first communication,
while I submitted mine at the end of last week following up on a reminder
sent out by Dr. Hall.

Please let me know if you have not received one or both of our proposed REU
projects. If you have received them, please make sure they are posted on the
website in a timely manner to give undergraduates a chance to consider them.
The "Broad research areas" listed are too generic. I also suggest that you
include the images supplied in the two REU projects I am referring to when
you post them. Images make the subject matter more attractive, and this is
important if we are to attract students to our La-Sigma activities.

LA-SiGMA REU:  Interdisciplinary Research Experiences in Materials Science.

LA-SiGMA is now accepting applications for the Summer 2011 REU Program.
Please distribute this information to your undergraduate students as this is
a Great Opportunity for them.

This Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU) project is a nine week
program where students work collaboratively on a wide variety of  
materials science projects.   Each student receives a stipend of  
$4,500, free housing in university dormitories, and up to $400 in travel
expenses.  30 students will be selected, 5 each at Louisiana State
University, Louisiana Tech University, Southern University at Baton Rouge,
Tulane University, University of New Orleans, and Xavier University of
Louisiana.

Qualifications:

. interested in a major that is within the computational science umbrella
(leaves out few majors as it includes all sciences, mathematics, and
engineering) with at least a 2.75 GPA, . considering a career in research
and/or graduate school in your major, and . a US citizen or permanent
resident

Important Dates:
. January 18, 2011: Application opens.
. February 28, 2011: Application deadline.
. March 31, 2011: Notification of decision.
. May 23 or May 30:  Program begins, then lasts 9-10 weeks (dates vary by
site)

  The research activities of LA-SiGMA are organized into three Science
Drivers:
-Electronic Materials
-Energy Materials
-Biomolecular Materials
and the CyberTools and Cyberinfrastructure group.

-These are broad, and sometimes overlapping, areas where faculty from
diverse departments (Mathematics, Computer Science, Physics, Mechanical
Engineering, Electrical and Computing Engineering, Biomolecular Engineering,
Biology, Chemistry, etc.) collaborate in multidisciplinary projects. Our REU
students will learn how to use some of the nation's largest supercomputers,
may participate in the setup and management of large-scale simulations, and
may take on an important role in the analysis and visualization of the
simulation results.
