[LA-SiGMA] LA-SiGMA Courses Fall 2011

Hello all,

     This fall LA-SiGMA faculty is offering two courses to all LA-SiGMA
campuses
via videoconferencing.

**    Adrienn Ruzsinszky (Tulane) is teaching Solid State Physics,
      Tuesdays & Thursdays, 9:30-10:45 beginning August 30th.

**    Randy Hall (LSU) will offer Introduction to Statistical
Thermodynamics,
      Tuesdays & Thursdays, 8:00-10:00 beginning September 8th to November
17th.

     If you want your students to attend either of the courses via
videoconferencing, please, contact
LA-SiGMA outreach coordinator, Leigh Townsend at lgalat1 at lsu.edu.
     In Solid State Physics by Adrienn Ruzsinszky, students will learn about
the different types of solids, their properties, and the concepts and
principles
underlying solid state physics. The students’ understanding will progress
through a
sequence of models or approximations, from the simplest to the more detailed
and
realistic. This course will cover subjects such as the Drude and the
Sommerfeld theory
of metals, the failures of the free-electron model, crystal and reciprocal
lattices,how to determinate
crystal structures by X-ray diffraction,  electrons in a weak periodic
potential, tight-binding method,
semiclassical model of electron dynamics, Fermi surface, classical and
quantum theory
of the harmonic crystal and semiconductors.


    Introduction to Statistical Thermodynamics by Randy Hall is a upper
level undergraduate course. The focus of the course is on introductory
quantum and classical statistical thermodynamics of some simple systems of
chemical relevance. This course will introduce students to statistical
mechanics and modern simulation methods. Students from chemistry, physics,
mechanical and chemical engineering, and mathematics are likely to find
this of interest. To coordinate with the La Tech quarter system, we will
hold 2 hour lectures twice a week over a ten-week period. The course will
be taught Tuesday & Thursday 8-10 AM beginning September 8th to November
17th.
