[LA-SiGMA-LSU] Funds available for undergraduates

Dear LA-SiGMA Colleagues, 

 

I wanted to make you aware of the opportunity to hire undergraduate students
into your research programs and have LA-SiGMA support them. In case you were
not aware, I have been charged with overseeing the undergraduate research
portion of the LA-SiGMA program and we have been highly under subscribed.
Over the past 4 years of the program we have spent less than half of the
funds dedicated to undergraduate research. In addition, Juana tells me that
we can hire students from other universities, community colleges, or even
high school students with this support. Please consider taking on a student
or two and contact me with their information. I have always found mentoring
these students to be highly rewarding and several have made significant
contributions to my research efforts. 

 

The beginning of the Fall semester is often a good time to bring new
students into your programs. I know that here in the Physics and Astronomy
department I will turn away several undergraduates looking for a research
position simply because I cannot properly mentor more than 3 undergraduates
along with my graduate students. Please also let me know if you would like
to mentor an undergraduate student or two but are having difficulty finding
interested students and we will  assist you in locating an appropriate
student.
