[LA-SiGMA-TESC] TESC (Technologies of Extreme Scale Computing) seminar on Thursday (9/24)

Technologies of Extreme Scale Computing (TESC) group will have a seminar this Thursday (9/24) at 12:00pm-1:00pm in 1034 Digital Media Center.  TESC seminars are intended to provide a platform  for exchanging ideas and establishing collaborations, especially in scientific code development and big data analytics using HPC.  We are grateful for the support of the High Performance Computing, Computational Biology, LA-SiGMA, Center for Computation and Technology, and Louisiana Optical Network Initiative.


Dr. Mingxuan Sun, an assistant professor at Division of Computer Science and Engineering, is going to present. The title of her talk is "Predictive Modeling for Recommender Systems".

Abstract:
Recommender systems are emerging to suggest items of interests to users and enable various of applications. Popular systems include Amazon's product recommendations, Netflix's movie recommendations, Pandora's music recommendations, and LinkedIn's job recommendations. A key challenge in building online recommender systems is to interpret large amounts of user generated data in order to serve each individual's information need. Effective modeling of user behavior data is critical for both business analytics and system engineering. In this talk, Mingxuan will focus on developing machine learning algorithms to leverage the user interaction to address two critical problems in current recommender systems: (1) the cold-start problem when little information is known about the preferences of new users and (2) modeling user return time to online services thus identifying the strategies to promote recommendations.
