[LA-SiGMA-TESC] Technologies for Extreme Scale Computing seminar Thursday (2/26)

We have our weekly TESC seminar this Thursday (2/26) at the Digital Media Center.


Dr. Seung-Jong Jay Park, a associate professor at the School of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, and his graduate student  Arghya Das will be presenting. The title is "Big data research over cyberinfrastructure".


Abstract:
Scientific breakthroughs will be empowered by advanced IT technologies and cyberinfrastructures enabling researchers to explore unprecedented amount of big data. To advance scientific discovery, most institutes have invested huge amount of resources to develop large-scale instruments (which produce unprecedented sheer volume of data), high performance computing facilities (which process the big data), and high speed networks (which transfer the data among the instruments and remote HPC sites).
The speaker will introduce challenges from three different perspectives: high performance computing, high speed I/O storage and high speed networking for Big Data applications. To address those challenges at network, transport and application layers, he will present his research projects: (i) developing cyberinfrastructure BIC-LSU integrating 10Gbps high speed network with HPC clusters (ii) designing transport protocols for high speed networks, and (iii) developing Hadoop-based distributed algorithms for Genome sequence de novo assembly over HPC facilities.  In addition, the speaker will introduce the fundamental technologies including Hadoop and Hadoop ecosystems so that audience can learn how to use those technologies for there big data related research applications.
