Hi all,

We will continue our weekly seminar this Thursday (11/6) at 
12:00PM-1:00PM in 1034 Digital Media Center.

Dr. Mayank Tyagi, an associate professor at the Craft & Hawkins 
Department of Petroleum Engineering will give a talk along the following 
theme: "Pore-scale flow simulations with sand migration using 
image-based models" (work in collaboration with Dr. Amin, Profs 
Thompson, Kumar on a funding by Intel gift [1])

Abstract:
"Image-based modeling is becoming popular in oil and gas industry due to 
the attractive features of creating a detailed representation of pore 
level connectivity and the ability of flow simulations to predict the 
macroscopic properties in a reasonable fashion. It has also motivated to 
understand other complex formation damage processes in great details 
too. One of such formation damage mechanisms is the sand migration and 
the resulting reduction in the media permeability at the macroscopic 
length scales. In this research effort, we are carrying out the detailed 
flow simulations using an open-source CFD toolkit, OpenFOAM and adding 
modules of particulate transport to resolve the sand migration phenomena 
at the pore-scales by using highly-resolved (and hence large size) 
unstructured meshes for the void spaces. A brief description of 
simulation challenges, preliminary results, and ongoing research work 
will be presented in this talk."
