My laboratory can contribute to the project by 1) conducting rheological measurements of soft materials (we have a grant and patent on novel  noncontact method for such measurements and have a working prototype of the device) and 2) developing rheological models of soft materials and the numerical simulation of material deformation.

Subject: [LI-investigators] EPSCoR RII Track 1 competition

Dear LONI Institute and LA-SiGMA members,
Just before the holidays, the State EPSCoR office sent out the request for proposals for the next EPSCoR RII Track 1 competition (attached).   If successful, this grant would provide up to $4/year for up to five years.  The subject matter of the RFP has significant overlap with LA-SiGMA and LONI Institute (LI).  Quoting from the RFP:

"The proposal must be focused on scientific and engineering research in Advanced Materials and Manufacturing; i.e., physics-based materials models to link manufacturing, production, design, and materials; smart materials; and multiscale systems and manufacturing. The proposed initiative should bring together a confluence of scientists and engineers to bridge the gaps that exist between theory, modeling and simulation, application, and production. The goal is to link the structure and composition of materials-extending the entire length scale-with their manufacturing and properties. Successful proposals will leverage the State's investments in computational resources, cyberinfrastructure, and advanced materials science. Proposals should establish strong linkages between institutions and the private sector. EPSCoR funds must be expended in Louisiana and cannot be transferred to other locations for these initiatives."

We should be able to leverage many of the outreach and education programs that have been build by LI and LA-SiGMA.  Thus far our research focus has been materials design using ICME, but we have not settled on any particular set of materials yet.  We would like to know if you would be able to participate in an organization meeting some time in the next week or so to discuss the possibility of putting together a proposal based upon LA-SiGMA and LI.   Possible dates for the meeting could be Jan 13, 15, 16, 22, or 23.  Since classes start at LSU on the 15th, the 13th might be the best date.  If enough people are interested, we will use a doodle poll to find the best time
