[LA-SiGMA-funded] Seminar by Steve Plimpton - Sid Fuchs ME Seminar Series and possibly LaSiGMA Seminar

Dear Colleagues,

 

I have corresponded with Steve Plimpton renewing the invitation I had
extended to him to deliver a seminar under the Sid Fuchs ME Seminar
Series (always on a Friday afternoon). He had tentatively accepted, and
indicated his particular interest in meeting with the groups that are
working with/interested in LAMMPS. This can also be a LaSiGMA seminar
(co-sponsored) subject to approval by the LaSiGMA Seminar Committee.
Either way, he will be meeting with anyone interested and especially
with LaSiGMA folks. In preparation, and until the time when the date is
set, I would like to give everyone the opportunity to express their
interest in meeting with him.

 

So please let me know if you are interested and also indicate which of
these subjects you would like to visit with him on (this will determine
the group each interested party will be placed, since there will be very
little time for one-to-one individual meetings):

 

1.      Multi-scale simulations and tool development with LAMMPS
(coarse-graining, continuum-MD/DPD, etc.)

2.      LAMMPS on GPUs

3.      General LAMMPS

 

The first two topics are those related to the letter of support he
provided to our grant proposal.

 

I would also propose a separate meeting with Graduate Students and
post-docs, not necessarily technical, but social (although it is
tempting to mix work and pleasure).

 

We will make provisions for our out-of-LSU colleagues and friends to
beam into these meetings. So if you will not be able to be physically
here, don't let this deter you from indicating your interest.

 

For those who do not recognize the name, Steve Plimpton has been, and
is, in charge of the LAMMPS project since inception, among other
exciting projects. LAMMPS is one of the most popular and flexible
open-source Molecular Dynamics simulation tools.

 

Depending on interest expressed, we can then define the number of days
for his visit, before he makes a decision on a date. I will be handling
the logistics and scheduling.
